Sunday Spoonful: Remembering
What should we remember, and what should we forget?
I was recently asked a question by a friend that sparked this post:
“What is it that you’re wrestling with lately?”
I appreciated the wording of the question because it encouraged a deeper consideration than a typical “How are you doing?” type of query. Deeper is usually good, and I sometimes worry that in the speed of daily life I am skimming more over the surface than diving into the depths. I was grateful for the prompt to delve further into how I am feeling.
I am wrestling with the same things that I imagine many of us are right now. How to survive in a world that seems to be falling apart while maintaining connection to our authentic selves. How to stoke hope and strength in the midst of so many seemingly powerful entities trying to strip us bare of these things.
I suppose that the answer to those struggles is remembering. Remembering our deep connection to this place and everything within it. Remembering that we are children of this planet and can be nurtured by her energy if we would allow that nurturing as we used to. Remember to stop grasping for everything that we can claim to own and just connect. To each other, to the air, to the soil, to all the other living beings populating this world. To remember to hold all of this life and connected energy in reverence.
That remembering and perhaps a forgetting. A forgetting of the notion that we are somehow separate from nature. Set apart and holding dominion over it rather than just another equal part of the shuddering energy of life all around us.
I currently live in the center of the United States mainland. In the heart of original Quapaw and Caddo territory. One thing that I am actively trying to remember daily is that there are historical ways of being on this specific ground where I stand that hold lessons about how to move through my time here more in harmony with the life that is sharing this space with me.
So, in the spirit of the gratitude with which I received this query I ask the same of you. What are you wrestling with lately? Are you in the process of remembering, or forgetting? Are you finding ways to open yourself up to the healing, nurturing energy that surrounds us?
Feel free to let me know in the comments. I would love to hear what people are struggling with and maybe even find some way in which we could help each other with those struggles.
